Sound Hounds 2011 outreach booths July 24 - Paws for the Cause Lacey, organized by Hawks Prairie Veterinary Hospital, benefit for a dozen animal charities (not Sound Hounds), August 27 - Run Like a Dog, South Bay Veterinary Hospital, a Humane Society fundraiser August 27 - Sound Hounds fundraiser, garage sale at 2414 Buker St SE, Olympia, 9-3, part of a Wildwood Neighborhood Association event. August 28 - Sand in the City, Olympia, Hands On Children's Museum fundraiser. August - Dog Days in the Barking Lot, booth at Bayview Market (Stormans) event related but not affiliated with Pet Parade. September - Bow-Wow Boogie, provided assistance at this Animal Services fundraiser. September 10 - Lacey Community Market Pet Day - cancelled our outreach booth, not enough volunteers :-( May 2011 - After frustration of not being allowed to help at our newly opened dog parks (the message we received was, "Don't call us, we'll call you.") and stalling on the part of Olympia and Thurston County to develop and implement a volunteer agreements, we posted action alerts our website to email these jurisdictions and encourage movement on the volunteer agreements. This approach worked with Thurston County and we are working with them on a volunteer agreement, but it had no effect on Olympia. We also posted a handy dandy contact sheet for the jurisdictions on our home page with the following message: Movement won't occur unless citizens, residents, or visitors contact the government leaders where they live (email and friendly tone works best :-) and remind them about dog park needs and benefits, that more dog parks are needed, and why. They need to know that dog park users expect them to work with Sound Hounds to designate sites and develop dog parks as soon as possible. January 2011 - The Thurston County Parks and Recreation Comprehensive Plan (Parks Plan) update is on-hold. When it resumes, the amount of public involvement will be extremely important to ensure that dog parks are included in the plan as essential park and recreation infrastructure. December 9, 2010 - Thanks to everyone for a very enjoyable holiday party, especially David and other helpers along the way. We had a nice-sized crowd for visiting and laughing and reflecting on Sound Hounds' accomplishments. There was much happiness and many stories about our two new dog parks!! Our sponsors Halina of Pet Connection Magazine and Evie of Lawn Doodles joined us along with several new-comers and many old-timers. Dirty Dave's was great place to hold the party. We ate a variety of good pizza and we were allowed to bring desserts. The door prize drawing was fun, thanks to contributions from Several Sound Hounds members. I had the honor to gift the 2010 Board members with framed photo collages (several more collages will be gifted to other key supporters). And I was quite touched by the Board's gift to me of a large Thurston County dog park brick. It will be inscribed and installed in the bone entryway in several months. I'm so proud to be part of Sound Hounds. We are all making such a difference, moving the region toward a better quality of life through dog parks. I love you dearly :-) Lynn December 6, 2010 - The books are in!! Orca Books is our new sponsor. They helped us purchase a quantity of books and will sell Visiting the Dog Park: Having Fun, Staying Safe by Cheryl S. Smith at the retail price of about $12. Donors who contributed $100 or more will receive a complimentary book as part of our appreciation of their support. Sound Hounds will add several books to the Timberland Regional Library collection. We will also sell the books at a discount price at future Sound Hounds booth events. This very readable book is an excellent way to learn about dog park design and etiquette and a few training skills for a better dog park experience. Canine body language, appropriate play styles, and conflict resolution are also covered in-depth. November 9, 2010 - Lacey held an open house to review the draft Woodland Creek Community Park master plan. Several dog park advocates attended the event, looked at displays, picked up information sheets, listened to presentations, and provided feedback and comments :-) Lynn November 3, 2010 - At the monthly Board meeting, we elected the 2011 Sound Hounds Board. The City of Olympia Sunrise Park Off-Leash Dog Area and the Thurston County Off-Leash Dog Area at Hawks Prairie (Hawks Prairie Dog Park). Thanks to the Olympia City Council (especially Rhenda Strub), the Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee, staff and management (especially David Hanna and Jonathon Turlove). Thanks to the Thurston County Board of County Commissioners (especially Sandra Romero), the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board, staff and management (especially Scott Schimelfenig and Jim Zygar). Thanks to all the dog parks advocates for supporting this effort. September 22, 2010 - Resuming the log after a long break... The Thurston County Off-Leash Dog Area at Hawks Prairie is expected to open at the end of October (not October 15). Parking will be a problem. HazoHouse, operating on the site of the dog park's parking lot, will not be moved to its new location by then. The county is planning to create temporary parking on the other side of the drive. Some parking will be available at the existing Closed Loop Park (garden) parking lot. Volunteers may be needed to help with the dog park opening, particularly help with parking and help reminding people not to take their dog (on-leash of course) into the Closed Loop Park garden. To volunteer, click on the "Yes, I'm Interested in Volunteering!" link on the homepage :-) Lynn August 10, 2010 - Olympia adopted an updated Olympia Parks, Arts, and Recreation 2010 Plan (Parks Plan) in a two-year planning effort. The update provides opportunities for many dog parks, including a five acre off-leash dog area at Chambers Lake Park in Southeast Olympia and another dog park to be built in an existing park. Here is the Chambers Lake Park Off-Leash Dog Area's architectural drawing. Thanks to Olympia for listening to the public and creating a Parks Plan that meets everyone's needs :-) July 22, 2010 - Lacey adopted an updated Comprehensive Plan for Outdoor Recreation (Parks Plan) in a six-month planning effort to guide development for the next 5-6 years. Dog parks are addressed as a desired community resource. Thanks to the Lacey staff and management, Board of Park Commissioners, Planning Commission, City Council, and the public, especially the many dog park advocates who attended the open house, public meetings, and completed surveys related to the plan over the six-month planning process. Lacey advocates will be working with the city on dog park development. May 7, 2010 - Board meeting. On the agenda: 1) Purchase decisions (books, pins, t-shirts for booth and web sales and membership gifts), 2) membership (Founding Membership 2005-2011), 3) fundraising (donation thank-you packages), 4) outreach (event planning and recaps (the egg hunt event was fun with lots of petition signatures and $52 in donations), 5) park development (rules and naming convention, Thurston County and Olympia sites, Tumwater and Lacey updates), 6) outreach (Speakers Bureau development, Animal Advocates public speaking workshop :-) Lynn April 3, 2010 - Heads up, the Wiener-Dog Races are coming to Elma, WA July 31 to August 1! We talked about TCTV and Speakers Bureau program development, Olympia and Thurston dog park construction projects, rules and naming convention, Olympia and Lacey Parks Plan updates, Tumwater dog park advocacy, t-shirts and books for booth and web sales, donation thank-yous, booth event planning (below), and a Sound Hounds presentation to the Humane Society :-) Lynn
2010 Booth Event Calendar – Dog-Gone Egg Hunt (April), Paws for the Cause (July 11), NKC show (July 17-18), Pet Day at Lacey Community Market (Aug 14), Run Like a Dog (Aug 28), Sand in the City (Aug 29 :-) Lynn February 3, 2010 - Our first Sound Hounds meeting of the year (we meet on the first Wednesdays, 6:30 to 8:00 pm, at Kevin and Skie's home - everyone is welcome!) Ten people attended. As always, we had fun and accomplished a lot. Here are some highlights: Dog park development: We continue to support Sound Hounds area jurisdictions as they work on dog parks at their stages of planning and development (rules evaluation, names list, models, photos, general information, research and consultation). Outreach: We're working on a Speakers Bureau to share information and inspriation about dog parks and doggie events, such as Spencer's experience with Waggin Wednesdays in Campbell, California, how it was the catalyst to completely revitalize their downtown. Thanks to Sara who distributed our first set of t-shirts. We're working on making books, t-shirts, and other items available for purchase at booth events and from local and online vendors. Fundraising: For current and future dog parks, we are working with on donation mailings and on Thurston County's buy-a-brick campaign :-) Lynn
January 20, 2010 - The first regional Park Board meeting in many years went quite well. About 60 Park Board members, elected officials, management, and staff within Thurston County met at River's Edge Restaurant in Tumwater (owned by Tumwater) to become acquainted and talk about parks and recreation. A representative from each jurisdiction presented a "trends and gems" summary. There was great interest in further coordination and collaboration. The group will further organize to address key topics, including fundraising, resource sharing, and dog parks. The next meeting will be in Tenino :-) Lynn
January 19, 2010 - Lacey held an open house at the City Hall with refreshments, displays and other information, survey, and lots of informal discussion. The Park Plan update will guide development for the next 5-6 years. Lacey wants to hear from everyone about their park and recreation experiences and ideas to incorporporate into the plan. The survey and other ways to provide more feedback will soon be available on Lacey's website. Let Lacey know that dog parks of all sizes are needed and feasible in their many parks in addition to dog parks in Thurston County and other South Sound jurisdictions :-) Lynn
